Velvet purl
Velvet purl
Velvet purl is a metal thread wound in a very tight spiral, creating a small flexible tube.
How is it used?
It is cut into fragments, then a thread and a fine needle (bead needle) are passed through the inside to apply it onto thick felt or a thin fabric stretched on a small embroidery hoop. It can also be embroidered over a relief of cord or card.
It is used together with jaseron, which creates the outlines of the motif.
Purl and jaseron are mainly used in Gold Embroidery, a traditional embroidery technique widely used in ceremonial costumes, ecclesiastical garments and haute couture. This highly creative technique has recently been modernised and is increasingly popular for creating original brooches and embroidered jewellery.
